Qiang Hei’s practice examines how technological systems intervene in locality, memory, and lived experience, drawing from his own trajectory of migration—from a coal-mining town in northern China to contemporary urban environments.
He has developed a sustained interest in the disappearance of local cultures, spatial transformation, and ruptures of memory. Grounded in field research, his practice draws on historical events and environmental change to examine collective memory and individual experience within contexts of population movement.
Working across 3D animation, VR games, interactive installations, and documentary video, Hei employs non-human perspectives and non-linear narrative structures to reconstruct overlooked local histories and emotional landscapes, foregrounding the entanglement between technology, memory, and place.
