LANDWAVE:RIPPLES OF THE WIND
2024
Real-time networked installation
Wind sensor, real-time environmental data, Unreal Engine simulation

Installation: variable duration

Overview

LANDWAVE: RIPPLES OF THE WIND is a networked work in which real-time wind data collected in London affects a digital reconstruction of an abandoned courtyard in Shanxi, China.

Within the Unreal Engine environment, changes in the distant wind generate ripple-like deformations across the reconstructed landscape, creating a continuous connection between two geographically separated places.

Local Context

The digital environment is based on an abandoned courtyard in Quan’ergou Village, Shanxi. The site was documented and reconstructed as a 3D environment, preserving traces of a domestic space that has gradually fallen out of use.

Wind Sensor System

A wind sensor installed in London records local wind conditions and transmits the data to the digital environment in real time.

Digital Reconstruction

The abandoned courtyard was digitally captured through photogrammetry and brought into Unreal Engine as a navigable environment.

Incoming wind data is mapped to the deformation of the digital terrain and architectural surfaces. As the wind changes in London, ripple-like waves move through the reconstructed courtyard in Shanxi.
London wind → Sensor → Network → Unreal Engine → Ripple deformation
