Overview
NOT A GREAT RELIC is a 3D animated moving-image work developed from field research in Quan’ergou Village, Shanxi. It combines documentary footage with digitally reconstructed environments, placing lived experience alongside idealized representations of rural life.
Drawing on the idea of counter-memory, the work explores how personal and local memories can diverge from dominant representations of place, and how moving image can become a space in which these different narratives coexist.
Local Context
Field research conducted in Quan’ergou Village documented its remaining domestic spaces, everyday life, and temple ruins, providing the spatial and narrative basis for the work.

Narrative Space
The 3D narrative space combines reconstructed elements from the village with idealized rural imagery, slogans, agricultural machinery, and imagined landscapes, creating a fictional environment in which lived experience and constructed representations coexist.
